What Does the Bible Say About Death?

The Bible says that death is part of life, but Jesus gives us hope beyond death.

When Jesus heard of His friend’s death He wept.

Jesus showed us how to grieve. So, when we cry or feel sad, it does not mean our faith is weak.

Jesus grieved over Lazarus – He wept (John 11:35).

God also tells us that He stays close to people who have broken hearts.

He sees our hurt and he cares about us.

Our ultimate hope is in Jesus and His resurrection. Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection, and the life” (John 11:25).

Thanks to Jesus, we Christians have hope even after death.

The Question

A commonly made statement when somebody dies?

The verse refers to comfort given at such time which, rest in peace is also capable of conveying to a certain extent.

It is used in writing funeral cards, messages of condolence and remembrance notes.

Suitable Bible verses in time of bereavement,Psalm 34:18 is a perfect verse because it lets you know God is close to all that is broken and wounded.

John 11:25 is an excellent verse; and I share this too because I always see Jesus pointing out the facts that, “I AM the resurrection, AND the life”.

Is grief acceptable to the Lord?

This doesn’t sound to be so from the scriptures. We are not admonished or cautioned against expressing our grief.

We see how our Savior, Jesus Christ wept at the death of His very dear friend Lazarus, when He approached Lazarus’ tomb (John11:35); this does not in any way connotes that tears and expressing sadness is sin.

The Holy Bible admonishes christians not to express grief in hopelessness, thus,

It is with the hope which we as christians must embrace and share that we should console bereaved people, rather than in absolute sorrow without any hope(First Thessalonians 4:13).
